Utmost is all about linking personal fitness, environmental health, and social good. Red Lantern Bicycles is exactly what we mean. We spoke to founder and CEO, Brian Gluck, about how these principles come together at the shop.
Health And Fitness
One of the best ways to stay fit is to stay active, and staying active is about more than the gym. Brian puts it as simply as it gets: “when you bike, you accidently get other benefits, like fitness.” Riding a bike for regular commutes like to work, school, the store, or around the neighborhood automatically builds exercise consistency, and in fitness, consistency is key.
Transportation, Accessability, Freedom
Especially in places like New York City, a bicycle can be the fastest way to get from one place to another. “Transportation offers both freedom and accessibility. You are on your schedule, not the train’s schedule, and you can go where the public transportation doesn’t reach.” Any New Yorker who has tried to cross town at rush hour, or explore the outer buroughs, knows what Brian is talking about.
Community
Red Lantern Bicycles is much more than a bike shop. It is also a cafe and bar featuring locally sourced, fair trade, and organic products as well as a gathering place for social events, like movie nights. “I wanted to be a part of a community – to offer a place to discuss with like minded individuals. People are becoming more insular with all of the technology. But I feel that people miss that one on one connection.” And the idea seems to be working. On weekends the coffee shop is full with people connecting, planning events, and enjoying each others company. “It’s hard work,” Brian says, “but I’m proud of it.”
Free Bike Program
As if that wasn’t already enough, Red Lantern Bicycles has also launched a program to help get bicycles to children in need. They take unwanted bikes – which one child has grown out of, for example – and pair them up with families looking for one. Check out the program here – Free Bike Program.
